Our take

Confession first: I nearly walked straight past. The frontage promises nothing, and my faith in scruffy little rooms has taken knocks before. Inside, though, is a kitchen chasing its own ideas, with a counter that will steer you well if you allow it. The cooking has nerve, and it wobbles; one plate arrived sure of itself, the next still seemed to be deciding what it wanted to become. Then came the last mouthful, a sharp pickled thing I have thought about since, which is more than many tidier kitchens leave you with. Heart outrunning polish, and I know which of the two I would keep. Go once a year, order nothing yourself, and let the house lead you. You will come away more intrigued than impressed, and there is a place in this city for exactly that.

Order this: Surrender the ordering to whoever is behind the bar, pickles included.

Second visit, and the shine was a notch duller than the first. Round one, I left telling everyone about a scrappy Sant Martí spot running on heart more than polish. That's still the truthful picture. But heart covers less when plates land uneven, and this time a few did. I'll check back in a year, rooting for them, expectations trimmed.

Our man at the stove, visible from most tables, cooked with the focus of someone who hasn't staff to spare. The room around him gets loud the way narrow rooms do: cheerful, a touch relentless, kinder early than late. The heart outweighs the polish, and the plates follow suit. A yearly outing in my book, taken with company who can shout.

What I almost ordered was the same plate as last time, which says the menu is short and the temptation to repeat a good thing is real. Go at lunch: the room breathes, the kitchen works at a pace that suits its means, and the modest formula makes sense. At dinner the seams show a little more. It runs on heart rather than schooling, and both halves of that sentence matter. Once a year, midday, no regrets.
