Our take

A piece of fish, whatever came off the boat that morning, cooked without fuss and set down as though it were nothing special. That is the answer, and at Agreste Mar the question of what to order hardly deserved the agonising I gave it. I sat in the Hotel The Serras end of Port Vell turning the menu over, weighing this against that, until the waiter asked what I actually felt like eating. The sea, I said. Va bene. The kitchen leans toward the water without any of the waterfront's usual theatre, and the service is kind rather than rehearsed. It will not rearrange your year, and it does not try to. Once or twice in it, though, when you want to be looked after at a price that leaves the evening intact, it is exactly the right call. I left planning nothing, which felt correct.

Order this: The morning's fish, cooked plainly; ask nothing more of it.

Fish soup was nearly my order, until the waiter mentioned what had come in that morning and I let the sea decide. Go at midday: the light does half the work in this Ciutat Vella room, and the kitchen feels looser at lunch than under the weight of evening service. Nothing here demands devotion, and that is its charm. A lunch or two a year does me, always unhurried.

On a narrow street in Ciutat Vella, first time round, I wandered in without a plan; second time, I booked, which tells you where I have landed. It doesn't shout, and I gather that costs it admirers. Their loss. The sea-leaning cooking is capable without ceremony, the pricing reasonable, and there is none of the coastal theatre that plagues the waterfront. I shall keep going back every so often, mildly baffled it isn't better loved.
