Our take

"Straight off the boat this morning," the waiter was telling the next table, and he said it flat, as plain fact, the way my mother's fishmonger used to. That is the style of this house: a grand hotel dining room with a market stall's respect for shellfish underneath the polish. The cooking is Mediterranean and sure of its ground, fast heat and exact salt, then the wisdom to leave well alone. It costs what produce of this order costs, and I would rather pay that than half as much for pretence. The room hums along without ever tipping into noise, and the service has the calm of long practice. Sundays and Mondays it stays dark, so plan. On my purse this is for days that deserve marking, and when one comes, I put on my better coat and go.

Order this: The freshest shellfish of the day, cooked plainly and served generous.

My only quarrel was with my own indecision: faced with shellfish of this quality, choosing anything feels like renouncing everything else. I surrendered, let the kitchen weight the table towards what the market had favoured, and it was the right instinct. Mediterranean cooking of real confidence, no swagger, in an Eixample dining room that stays lively without ever tipping into din. Costly, certainly, and I shall ration my visits accordingly, with some regret.

Our waiter, asked where he'd send us afterwards for a digestif, considered the question as seriously as he'd taken the wine order, which tells you how this house treats its patch of the Eixample. Step outside and it's all offices and good tailoring; inside, the shellfish gets more reverence than either. Service reads the table well; the room hums without shouting. Deservedly busy.

When the bill landed on my first visit I winced; on the second, having ordered with more courage, I understood it. Shellfish of this quality costs what it costs, and this kitchen handles it with an assurance that never turns to showing off. The room felt fuller the second time and somehow calmer too. A serious seafood house that improves as you learn its rhythms; the third visit is already booked in my head.
