Our take

Wednesday lunch, no reservation, and they found us a corner without fuss — already a point in its favour. Avenir belongs to that quiet breed of Sant Gervasi dining rooms where the cooking is contemporary but the manners are old: bread worth finishing, a menu short enough to trust, service that watches without hovering. My braised dish came properly rested, the sauce reduced by patience and not by tricks, and the vegetables tasted of the market that morning. Nothing on the table begged to be photographed, everything asked to be eaten. Prices stay honest for the neighbourhood, portions feed a person who has worked all day. I keep a short list of places I can bring my mother without explaining anything first; this one earned its spot by the second course.

Order this: Whatever braise anchors the short menu that week, and the house bread with it.

This kitchen is better than its bill lets on, which brings me to the flaw: the dining room is so self-effacing you could walk straight past your own reservation (a failing, I grant, of the mildest sort). It matters less than it might, because the plates supply the personality the walls decline to: clear ideas, seasoning spot on, reach trimmed to what the stove can honour. Every quarter or so I remember it exists, go, and leave wondering why I left it so long.

Soft lighting, tables at a sensible distance, a Sant Gervasi room that lets you actually talk. What stayed with me was smaller: our waiter noticed a half-finished plate, asked if something was wrong, and when we confessed we were only pacing ourselves, laughed and slowed the whole meal to match. Cooking with more thought than the price suggests, and service that pays attention. I will be back often.

My second visit settled it. Avenir understands time: courses spaced so each gets your full attention, nothing arriving before you are ready, nothing held back for effect. One clear idea per plate, seasoned with seny, finished with patience. Prices this modest rarely buy such care in Sant Gervasi. Between dishes I nursed my glass and felt no hurry anywhere in the room. A quiet habit now, and one I keep.
