Our take
Halfway through a cold glass of white, elbows on the bar, and the evening has already chosen its own pace. Wine here is handled at speed rather than at length: bottles opened cheerfully, glasses refilled before you ask, a list that plays safe rather than curious. Fair enough, because the room runs on momentum, and nobody wants a lecture on vintages while the fry station is going at full tilt. The cooking has spirit, the produce is treated with respect, and yet nothing on the plate or in the glass quite tipped the night into essential. Once a year, when I'm close by and want the buzz as much as the food, it earns its place. Come thirsty, order simply, and the evening takes care of itself.
Order this: Something cold and simple in the glass, and whatever the counter is frying that day.

The panel — every critic who went
Unanimous — all agreeMuggy evening, the old town doing a fair impression of a steam room, and the last thing I expected was to be ambushed by a vegetable. Yet the plate I keep thinking about was the simplest green thing on offer, handled with rather more care than all the surrounding swagger. There's proper verve here and solid competence beneath it, if not quite the pull that turns a fun night into a fixture. A thoroughly enjoyable evening; one a year should cover it.
Energy is not the same thing as excellence. The wine service here illustrates the difference: bottles arrive briskly and glasses are filled with cheer, yet the list wants curating, and nobody ventured a thought on what might suit the food. At this price the bottle should be handled, not merely delivered. A lively room, a decent hand in the kitchen; one visit a year answers it for me.
