Our take

Elbows on the bar, vermut half drunk, and a clear view of the plancha, which is where this kitchen makes its argument. No wizardry back there: a cook who turns things at the right second and salts as if he's paying for it himself, which at this level is what skill actually means. Tapas land in sensible order, hot things hot, cold things dressed at the last minute instead of an hour ahead. None of it will detain the memory for long, and I doubt anyone in the kitchen minds. It's a neighbourhood default, the address you half keep to yourself out of mild selfishness, shut Sundays and Mondays and better for not courting anyone's approval. Every so often I drift in expecting little and drift out rather pleased. That will do.

Order this: The house's daily suggestion, and a vermut while it's coming.

Half the dining room seemed on first-name terms with the kitchen, orders taken, adjusted and remembered without a notepad in sight. When my plate arrived wrong anyway, the fix came fast, with an apology that felt meant rather than managed. That told me the level better than anything on it: capable neighbourhood cooking, quietly done, no theatre. It will not call you back often, but it treats you well when you come.

Wind, the raw January sort, had emptied the pavements, and the fogged windows of this place were the best advertisement on the street. The cooking keeps the promise the glass makes: capable, unshowy, fairly priced, plates that taste better because it is miserable out. Nothing here will haunt you a week later, and it does not need to. On the next foul night, I know which door I am taking.

The bill at Bar Canyí is the kindest thing about it, and I mean that fondly. Capable neighbourhood cooking with no wish to be noticed, priced so nobody flinches. Nothing on the table asked to be photographed, and nothing needed to be. I'd go back once a year, for dinner in the Eixample without ceremony and change left over for a last glass.
