Our take

Rain was flattening Ciutat Vella and half the street had taken shelter alongside me, elbows on the bar, glasses filling as fast as the gutters outside. Bar del Pla wears winter well. It has the comfortable bones of a room that has been pouring for a long while, and the low-intervention side of the list is kept out of belief rather than fashion. Nobody shouts here, which I prize in a wine bar; the service is warm, the ease is unforced, and the hour I'd allowed quietly became three. Somewhere around the second glass of vi I stopped checking the window. When it's grim outside, that's your moment; the room is at its best with the weather at its worst.

Order this: Whatever the barman is drinking himself; ask and he'll pour it.

We chanced it without a booking and were wedged in at the bar inside five minutes, which tells you how the room runs. The city adores Bar del Pla, with reason; the pouring is well minded, especially at the natural end of the list. My trouble is the roar. By nine, conversation goes under and stays there. Once a year, early in the evening, before the volume wins.

Small room, low light, a counter worn smooth by decades of elbows. The main event here is not a plate but the pouring: a list that treats its natural wines with respect, glasses that arrive sure of themselves. I pull up a stool, ask what is open, and stay longer than I intended. After years of white tablecloths, it is a correction I take gladly, and often.

A plate came off the pass while I was wedged at the counter, and I'll say this: the kitchen moves well. Clean frying, confident seasoning, hands that don't hesitate. Everyone I know adores this place, and up close I get the appeal. For me it's a now-and-then stop, not a crush. Great bones, lovely pours, but the food didn't chase me home the way it seems to chase everyone else.
