Our take
August heat outside, a cold glass of white in my hand, and the marble counter doing what marble does best. Bar Mut is at its finest exactly then, when the city slows and you want somewhere unhurried near Diagonal rather than somewhere that performs. Truth told, the cooking is competent rather than thrilling, and nothing I have eaten here has followed me home afterwards. But not every table needs to haunt you. The welcome is unforced, the prices are sensible against the quality, and in a district fond of preening there is something restful about a room content with decency. I drop in every few months, usually when the weather turns extreme in one direction or the other, and it gives me the modest, pleasant evening I came for. No more, no less.
Order this: A cold glass of white and the plainest dish chalked up that afternoon.

The panel — every critic who went
Unanimous — all agreeSomething braised, recommended by the regular at my elbow, was the best of an easy evening. The crowd is well-heeled Eixample, people who treat the room as an extension of their salon and are received accordingly. Nothing on the plate startles; nothing offends either. Steadiness over sparkle, a bill that stays polite. When the appetite is modest, and it often is, this fits nicely.
Perched at the counter with a simply grilled fish, Bar Mut makes a decent case for itself. The bar seat is the right call: you can watch the pass at work without paying opera prices for the privilege. Competent cooking, an easy mood, nothing straining. I'm in the Eixample often enough that this stool will see me again before long.
Booking was no trouble on a weekday (a Tuesday, admittedly), which tells you something in this stretch of the Eixample. The wine is the best of it: bottles offered without fanfare, an honest pour, nobody steering you towards the dear end of the list. The cooking is competent and stops there. Amiable, easy company of a place. I drop in every so often, mostly for the glass and the mood.
