Our take

My one grumble, and it is small: the bread arrived cold this time, which it didn't on my first visit last spring. Otherwise Bar Omar is much as I left it, and in Sant Gervasi that counts as a compliment. This is a modest little tapas bar with no interest in turning heads, and the plainness is a fair slice of the appeal. Between the first visit and the second, nothing had slipped and nothing had grown ambitions; I mean both kindly. The cooking stays steady, not exciting, the service is warm without hovering, and the bill arrives and fails to annoy. I wouldn't cross the city for it, but if I lived on the street I'd be quietly pleased about that. Once a year, when I'm up that way, suits us both.

Order this: Ask what came in fresh that morning and take the simplest thing they suggest.

Nothing about the room tries to impress you, and about ten minutes in, that starts to feel deliberate. You walk into a plain little spot in Sarrià, get seated without fuss, and the food starts arriving, steady and unshowy. It won't turn anyone's head. It won't let anyone down either. When I want calm competence instead of fireworks, once a year or so, this is where I end up.

Our waiter topped up my glass mid-sentence, without ceremony and without losing the thread of an order he was taking two tables away. That small competence is the house in miniature. Bar Omar won't turn heads and shows no wish to; it does steady work in plain clothes, and the absence of pretension is a fair part of the charm. We see each other rarely, this place and I, and part on good terms every time.

The cook barely looked up when I took the last seat at the counter, and I mean that kindly; he had work to do. From there you watch a modest kitchen keep a modest promise. Nothing turned my head, nothing let me down. Comfortable, competent, a touch forgettable. I will pass again some evening when I want feeding without fuss, and that will be soon enough.
