Garlic hitting hot oil, and under it good stock: you smell this kitchen before you have properly sat down, and in the Gòtic that alone is news. At the next table two women from the barrio argued, kindly, about whether the old Bodega La Palma would approve of its young venture in the rooms Pla left behind; by the second course they had decided it would. So have I. Bellafila cooks like it plans to stay, turning its back on the wallpaper paella that keeps this postcode fed and fooled. Come at midday for the set lunch, when they charge you like a neighbour; evenings drift towards tourist arithmetic. They shut Sunday and Monday, so think ahead. Twice a year, corner table, regulars in earshot: that suits me perfectly.
Order this: The set lunch at midday, every course of it, and coffee to eavesdrop over.

First time round I hovered over what the next table was having, then swallowed my manners, asked for the same, and ate better for it. My return, months later, confirmed the hint: in a Gòtic postcode papered with tourist bait, here is a proper restaurant that has refused to dumb itself down for the passing trade, which in these streets borders on rebellion. Rare visits for me, but never once a regret.
Outside, the Gòtic is doing its usual impression of a theme park; inside, remarkably, the tables are speaking Catalan. That is the achievement. Bellafilla has held its nerve in a postcode where dumbing down pays, and the crowd it draws, regulars, leisurely, faintly territorial, is the best endorsement going. Prices feel a bit of a stretch for what turns up, so I ration it to the odd occasion.
Between courses I watched the Gòtic drift past the window, menus in six languages, and marvelled that this room has declined to join the racket. Bellafilla cooks for people who mean to come back, not for those passing through, and the bill honours that contract: not inexpensive, but priced to a standard rather than to a postcode. In these lanes that is nearly an act of defiance. A yearly appointment I intend to keep.
