Our take

Poblenou grows neobistrós faster than it grows plane trees, and most are the same shop wearing different chairs. Not this one. The house style shows first in the pour: a well-chosen glass from a short list, set down without ceremony, priced as if they expect to see you again. The same attitude runs through the menu, brief, chalked fresh each day, cooked by somebody with a point of view rather than a bought concept. Nothing on that board is angling for a photograph. You eat, you talk, the room hums at its own easy volume, and the bill stops short of cheek. Grand occasions live elsewhere, and fine; this is the address for the ordinary good evening, and I claim one whenever the calendar loosens.

Order this: Trust the chalkboard's top line, plus the glass they suggest beside it.

Tempted by the set lunch, I went off-script instead, and Poblenou made that feel right: this is a district that has learnt to expect a real cook behind a brief menu. Bistró Nou obliges. A compact room, a confident hand, prices pitched at people who read menus properly. When the neighbourhood next pulls me east, I'll answer.

'They've changed it again,' sighed a woman by the door, shaking rain off her umbrella, and she meant the menu, which here is short enough to turn over often. On a wet Poblenou night that brevity has teeth: I found only a pair of dishes calling to me. Both, though, showed a real cook thinking, not a borrowed concept, and I will take that trade. A handful of wet nights a year, and gladly.
