Our take

An elbow in my ribs, a stranger's laughter, and a glass of cloudy red passed over my shoulder because the barman couldn't reach me any other way. That's Bodega Bonavista on a Friday, and the crowding is the flaw. If you need air and elbow room, this Gràcia bodega will defeat you; it's more shop counter than dining room, and there were moments I'd have paid for three more centimetres. But the crush is also the mechanism. You find yourself talking to whoever's nearest, the plates are there to keep the vi company, and the natural-leaning list rewards curiosity whenever I test it. Cheap enough to be careless with, good enough to need no forgiving. I get back every few months, and I've never yet left without a new acquaintance or a new bottle written on my wrist.

Order this: The natural red the barman is proudest of that day, poured without ceremony.

Anchovies, bread, a glass of something faintly cloudy, all of it taken at the counter because there is nowhere else to be. The counter is the whole argument: shop-tight, shoulder to shoulder, strangers turned table-mates by the second pour. Plenty would call it cramped and move on. I keep going back monthly, and I have stopped explaining why. Some rooms feed you; this one keeps you.

My elbows have opinions about this bodega: there is nowhere to put them. That is my complaint, and the whole of it. Step out with your glass and Gràcia does the rest, neighbours drifting in for a bottle to carry home and staying for one at the counter instead, the street itself part of the furniture. The wine leans natural, the plates keep it company, and the crush turns strangers into dinner companions. Bring patience, leave with friends.
