Our take

Early evening, midweek, the hour when a bodega either earns its keep or does not. This one just about does. A glass, some olives, a tin opened straight onto the table, a room whose lighting has never once been considered, thank goodness. The bill, when it arrives, is the best part of the night: small, legible, settled quickly. That is the deal, and a fair one, provided you do not ask for more than the deal covers. It neither dazzles nor offends. My mother would have called it a place to eat rather than a place to talk about, and she would have meant both halves. They open every day of the week, generous for the format. Once a year I drift in, spend little, leave fed. There are worse arrangements in this city.

Order this: A vermut, a plate of olives, maybe a conserva; the basics are what they do best.

Almost the vermut, that first cold Sunday of November, when the Eixample turns grey and you want something sweet and red. Instead, a glass of white and a few plates, all of them fine, none of them memorable. The room has never once thought about its lighting, which I found oddly restful. You leave fed and unbothered, and by spring I will have forgotten the details. Once a year suits us both.

This room gave up on flattering light long ago, which I offer as mild praise. Harder to forgive is the cooking's complete indifference: plates that arrive, feed, and fade from memory before the coffee. Nothing is wrong, and that is precisely the trouble. None of it capsizes an evening; a glass and a few small plates pass agreeably. A single visit holds me for a long while, and I doubt I shall notice the interval.
