Late spring, when the shellfish is at its proudest, is the season to give this old Galician institution her single annual evening. There is a ritual I love despite myself: the white jackets presenting the platter before it is dressed, a small ceremony performed with complete seriousness, as though the dining room on Gran de Gràcia were a stage that never went dark. The product deserves the reverence, in fairness; sourcing and handling are beyond reproach, and the plainest preparations are the strongest. What I cannot love is the bill, which charges for legend as much as for lunch, nor the shoulder-to-shoulder seating with tour groups ticking a box. So make it an occasion, once, with people you like, and enjoy the show for what it is.
Order this: That morning's shellfish, plainly dressed; nothing that needs a sauce to justify itself.

A platter of shellfish, delivered with the flourish of an institution that has been performing this flourish for decades. Go at lunch: daylight is kinder to Gran de Gràcia's grand old Galician, the white jackets move with less ceremony, and the theatre feels closer to sincere. At dinner you pay institution prices for institution complacency. Once a year, at midday, it still earns its legend. Just.
Our waiter set down the shellfish with a flourish you could set to music, then vanished for the better part of an hour. That's the whole place in one move: immaculate performance, optional follow-through. The room still purrs like an institution that stopped auditioning decades ago, and the seafood is fine, truly. At these prices, though, fine plus a flourish isn't a meal, it's a show, and one showing a year is plenty for me.
