Our take

The room smells faintly of embers before you have seen the grill, and that first breath tells you what Brabo is about: fire, good ingredients, and the judgement to keep the two in proportion, so the smoke serves the food instead of smothering it. One service moment stayed with me. Midway through, our waiter noticed one plate had waited a minute too long at the pass and took it back unprompted, returning with a fresh one and no speech about it. That unshowy standard runs through the house. Gràcia suits it, and the sort of restaurant a neighbourhood is lucky to have deserves its custom: a relaxed room, prices that don't sting, a kitchen letting the coals and the calendar set the menu. It rests on Sunday and Monday; the rest of the week, I'll keep finding room for it in mine.

Order this: Ask what came off the coals that morning, vegetable or fish, and have that.

Tempted by the fish that day, I ended up with something from the grill instead, and the coals made the argument for me. Fire and good produce, no wasted fuss; the smoke serves the ingredient rather than smothering it. Lunch is my hour here: light through the door, the brasa just hitting its stride, Gràcia idling outside. Dinner is livelier and just as capable, but midday shows the judgement best. A neighbourhood kitchen I fold into the season without thinking.

My first visit left me muttering about the smoke, which crowded a fine piece of fish. I returned, mildly reluctant, and was corrected. The coals now season rather than shout; the produce carries the plate, and the fire shows real judgement. Others find the place merely pleasant. I have begun folding it into my month, which from me is close to a declaration.

Cooking over coals is routinely underrated, and I gather Brabo draws a shrug here and there from diners who wanted more spectacle for their money. Ignore them. The drinks are the tell: a short list, smoke-friendly, poured with a free hand and no lecture, wines chosen to serve the grill, not the other way round. Anywhere that thinks about its glasses this practically can have my custom monthly, and gladly.
