Our take

A room this settled can't be decorated into existence; it has to be earned service by service, and Can Pineda has clearly been earning it since long before anyone thought to write about Sant Martí. The moment that won me over: mid-rush, one of the waiters caught my companion eyeing the slow-cooked plate at the next table and brought over a spoonful to try, unasked, as though hospitality were the point rather than the performance. The cooking is old-school Catalan without a flicker of irony, slow, seasonal, deeply sauced, and the distance from the sightseeing circuit keeps the clientele local and the standards where they should be. Book ahead, note the Sunday and Monday closing, arrive hungry and in no hurry. I'll be back every few months without needing a reason, which is about the highest compliment I keep.

Order this: Whatever the kitchen has had in the pot since morning; braises are the house's first language.

Okay, one gripe: nobody hands you a wine list here so much as tells you what's open. Out in Sant Martí, that turns out to be the right call. The pours are generous, the house red suits the old-school Catalan cooking it sits beside, and when I asked a question I got a straight answer instead of a speech. I'd ride the metro out for that every few months, happily.

Loud, undeniably; the room clatters like a family lunch that never quite ended, and you'll repeat yourself before the first course reaches the table. I would change nothing else. Out in Sant Martí, far from the tourist churn, this is old-school Catalan cooking done with seny and without irony, in a dining room that has fed its neighbourhood since long before anyone kept lists. The din is the sound of a place still needed. Arrive hungry.
