Our take

Two bites of a plate off the daily board settled it: generous, unfussy cooking from a kitchen with nothing left to prove. Still, the moment I keep returning to came between courses. The waiter, watching us dither over the specialities, gently took the menu away and promised to bring what was best that day. He was right, twice over. Can Ugal faces the Plaça del Centre, and almost nobody beyond Les Corts seems to have noticed, which keeps the tables bookable and the prices sane, free of the surcharge that fame drags in behind it. There is no concept to decode, no theatre to sit through. I would return a few times a year and consider it quiet good luck on each occasion. Go before the internet catches on, because eventually it will.

Order this: Ask what the daily board is proudest of and take the waiter at his word.

On a raw February Tuesday, the block in Les Corts gave nothing away: offices, shuttered storefronts, people hurrying past. Then lunch at Can Ugal, and the day reorganized itself. Big-hearted, unfussy cooking with zero concept attached, exactly what cold weather asks for. Almost nobody I know has heard of the place. I intend to keep half-ruining that.

Plain truth: the second visit is where most kitchens come apart, and this one did not. Months after the first meal I found the same ample, unfussy cooking, portions that take your hunger seriously, no concept, no theatrics. Hardly anyone talks about Can Ugal, which suits me fine. Kitchens with nothing to prove are the ones I trust, and this one delivers, plate after plate, without apology.

Finding it is the hard part; Les Corts does not advertise its treasures, and neither does this one. My quibble, if pressed: the wine list is short. Then again every bottle earns its place, poured with a free hand by people who clearly drink what they sell, and priced as though they would like you to try a second. Cooking without concepts, wine without fuss. I keep a quarterly appointment with both.
