The street outside is workaday Sants-Montjuïc: shutters, a bus stop, no promises made. Inside, the volume of ideas jumps. Mexican flavour run through Barcelona product could easily be a stunt, and at COME it mostly is not; there is a genuine point of view, playful and loud in the right way, with more personality packed onto each plate than many kitchens manage across a whole menu. Worth knowing before you plan: most of the week this is a dinner, and the tasting format suits the dark hours, when you can hand over the pacing entirely. Monday is the exception, the one day lunch is on the table, and I would argue the brightness and the acidity read even better in daylight. Either way, trust the kitchen with the whole meal. I make it out this way a few times a year and it justifies every trip.
Order this: The tasting menu, start to finish; better to let the kitchen set the route.

Rain was drumming on Sants-Montjuïc, and inside the meal moved like good conversation: a quick joke of a bite, then a plate that asks for patience, then another burst of spice. Nobody hurried us, nobody parked us. Mexico spoken through Catalan produce could have been a gimmick; instead it is a voice, che meraviglia, with craft to spare under all that colour. It is a long way from my part of town. I have stopped minding; I keep finding reasons to book again.
Chilli and corn on the air, a low red-gold light, and around me a scattering of diners who had clearly been before and knew what was coming. Mexico read through Barcelona's larder should not work; here it does, because the hand behind it is sure and the exuberance disciplined. Sants-Montjuïc sits well off my usual orbit, so a single annual visit must serve, yet each one sends me home persuaded. The regulars, I notice, look neither surprised nor remotely inclined to share.
Very nearly played it safe with a couple of plates; instead I let the kitchen steer, which is the right call here. The room runs loud, all colour and clatter, and for once the noise belongs to the food: Mexican fire through Barcelona produce, personality packed onto every plate. Plenty of people I trust go back constantly. For me it stays a yearly check-in, and a happy one.
