Our take

Eight on a weeknight, and El Fort Pienc was quiet enough that I heard the kitchen before I saw it. I took the seat nearest the pass and watched. The name means swimming against the current, and the cooking backs the claim: a bistró with a point of view, plates built from decisions rather than habits, natural wine poured with the same independence. Up close, the technique is good without being finished. An emulsion split just perceptibly, a texture wanted one more minute; details, but at this ambition they count. What keeps me interested is the honesty of the reach, and the fact that prices hold steady while the kitchen works itself out. The crowds haven't arrived yet, so you can hear yourself think. I'll check back next year to see how far against the current they've swum.

Order this: Let the stranger plates lead; caution is wasted in a place named against the current.

Halfway through dinner it hit me what bugs me here: the kitchen's stubborn streak means that when an idea misses, it really misses, because nobody is sanding the edges off. Does that sink Contracorrent? Not quite. A place with an actual point of view earns its misfires, and the room stays blessedly uncrowded, which suits food that asks for your attention. I'll be back, just not soon.

Barcelona has plenty of kitchens cooking from a checklist, and this is emphatically not one of them. The dining room sits at conversation volume, half empty on my visit, which suited me and ought to worry them. Real thought reaches the table, a point of view you can taste, though not every idea earns its keep. Once a year satisfies my curiosity. Until the crowd catches on, you may book on a whim and talk without shouting.
