Our take
One plate in and I had stopped worrying about the choice. Deciding what to order here is the pleasant sort of problem: the menu is contemporary and ambitious, priced sensibly enough that a wrong turn would not sting, and the honest answer is to hand the whole question back to the kitchen with the set tasting menu, where the craft shows fullest. I will be plain: not everything works. The odd plate arrives busier than it needs to be, a garnish too many where the produce could have spoken alone. But the ratio of craft to price is strong, and there is hunger in this kitchen, the useful kind, the kind that improves. I go back every so often to see what has sharpened. Something always has.
Order this: The set tasting menu, the full sweep of the kitchen's range in one sitting.

The panel — every critic who went
Unanimous — all agreeThe room undersells what happens in the pans: comfortable, unremarkable, no warning of the intent behind it. What stayed with me was a waiter who caught us dithering between two dishes and gently took the decision away, correctly, as it turned out. That kind of confidence means the floor trusts the stove. One or two plates try a little too hard, but I left wanting to show the place to people I like.
A quibble first: one or two plates carry an element too many, garnish where restraint would serve better. Choosing at Cruix is nonetheless a pleasure, because the ambition is real and the prices stay sensible, so one may order boldly without doing arithmetic. I let the kitchen steer me and was rewarded; the seasoning shows intent rather than habit. A young kitchen still climbing, and worth following each quarter as it climbs.
We passed on the longer menu and kept the order short, which is how I like to test a young kitchen. Bring the friend who cooks: they'll clock the seasoning done with intent, and also the one plate carrying a garnish too many. Cruix runs on ambition priced sensibly, and its misses read as hunger rather than carelessness. A visit every few months suits me, enough distance to notice how the cooking tightens between rounds.
