Our take

"Trust them," murmured the man beside me, apparently to no one in particular, as another course landed. Sound advice. Direkte occupies a few stools tucked into the Boqueria, and the deal is simple: one weekly tasting, no alternatives, built from that morning's shopping. The surprise, frankly, was a course I'd have walked past on any menu — humble stuff from the market, handled with the sort of care that makes you sit up. The cooks talk to you while they work, the room hums along, and nobody is auditioning for anything. For cooking of this order the bill is rather reasonable, which in this city counts as an event. A bit of a squeeze, yes, and you book ahead, but I left plotting the next visit before I'd found my umbrella.

Order this: The weekly tasting; there is nothing else on offer, and frankly that is rather the point.

I nearly ordered cautiously, the way you do at a counter you don't yet know. The cook caught my hesitation and, with no push at all, steered me somewhere better; that small exchange is Direkte in miniature. A tiny room in the Eixample, market product, people cooking because they like it, nothing done for show. I'm back every couple of months, and it has yet to wobble.

Barely wider than a family kitchen, the counter, and outside a mean January drizzle turning the Eixample grey. Inside, none of it mattered. Market fish, cooks who visibly like their work, timing you could set a watch by. Small rooms hold warmth the way big ones never manage, and on a wet winter afternoon that counts double. I thawed out completely, and the plates kept arriving at exactly the temperature of the mood.

Hot from the pan to your hand, barely a metre of travel: food this close to the flame keeps a temperature most kitchens lose on the pass. I was torn between two dishes, one leaning Japanese, the other pure market, so I asked the cook which he would eat after service. I got a straight answer and a better lunch. A handful of stools, produce first, nobody performing. Every three months or so I take one of those seats.
