Our take

Old rooms carry themselves differently, and this one, on its quiet square in Poblenou, has the settled air of a place that stopped needing to prove anything years ago. I took a seat at the bar while my table was readied and very nearly stayed there, close enough to watch the rhythm of a kitchen that has cooked fish the traditional way long enough to have earned its habits. Rice arrives with whatever the boats brought in, seafood handled with the plainness of a kitchen sure of itself. Around me the dining room filled with people marking occasions, as it has for years. Prices respect the plate, and the square outside still feels like the Barcelona of before. I return every few months and leave already planning the next arròs. Allora, some institutions deserve the word.

Order this: The rice of the day, built around whatever the boats landed that morning.

This old Poblenou dining room has seen so many family celebrations that the furniture feels like a relative. The draw is the fish: the day's catch done the traditional way, and above all the arroces, rice given proper stock and proper time. Nothing chases fashion. The kitchen has cooked like this for long enough that repetition has turned into mastery, and the neighbourhood has known for years what the rest of the city is only now finding out.

The napkin ring gave the game away: heavy, old, polished dull by decades of Poblenou hands. Houses like this keep their habits because the habits work. My struggle was the eternal one here, between the day's fish done plainly and an arròs that refuses to be hurried, and the rice won by a nose. Not a modest bill, but the money is on the plate rather than the decor. I return every season, and it hasn't failed me yet.
