Our take

Two in the afternoon, the room half full and humming, and a waiter took back a bocadillo, unasked, because the bread had not come out to his liking; three minutes later a better one landed in its place. That gesture is the house in miniature. Here is a sandwich shop that refuses to treat the sandwich as a lesser art: classic bocadillos, built with the kind of exactness the format rarely gets, served in a room that manages smart and relaxed in the same breath. No queue of tourists, no theatre, and prices pitched where they ought to be. My only reservation concerns ceilings; it has picked one humble format and mastered it, and asks nothing more of itself, so my visits stay occasional rather than habitual. Cities need such addresses anyway. I keep this one in my back pocket, gladly.

Order this: A classic bocadillo, nothing clever beside it; everything rests on the bread-to-filling judgment.

Outside, the Eixample goes about its errands and hardly anyone breaks stride for a sandwich shop, which is their loss. Inside, the room manages to be smart and relaxed at once, a harder trick than it looks, and everything between the bread is made with evident care. No tourist queue, no performance for one either. This address rewards the local who knows it, and once or twice a year it serves me perfectly.

Like stepping into a good cellar instead of a shop: the first thing that lands is a greeting that assumes you might stay a while. For a sandwich counter, that counts as a small rebellion. The bread is handled with the care I normally save for serious wine, and the room holds polish and ease in the same hand. No queue, no performance. Then a year slips by before I think of it again, which says more about me than about them.

That handsome little room hasn't changed since my first visit: smart without trying, relaxed without slouching, a balance most places fumble. On this second pass the sandwiches were a shade less remarkable than memory insisted, though still made with evident care, which is more than many kitchens manage at twice the effort. A sandwich shop worth taking seriously remains a rarity here. Annually suits it; not an occasion, merely a quiet pleasure.
