Our take

Bare wood, raw plaster, careful lighting: the room is handsome in a deliberate, pared-down way, and it does a great deal of the talking. What a room like this promises is a kitchen with a signature, and there my reservations begin. I spent the evening waiting for the plate the place is supposedly built around, the one that would quiet the chatter about the name, and it never announced itself. Everything was capable. Textures correct, temperatures right, nothing to send back and nothing to carry home in the memory either. Beside the Hotel REC in the Born, it makes a perfectly pleasant evening that stops short of a persuasive one. Once a year I'll check back, mostly to see whether the cooking has caught up with the design. For now the design is ahead.

Order this: Ask what the kitchen considers its signature plate and begin there.

Passed on the dish our server was pushing hardest and ordered the two I was honestly torn between. Split decision: one plate very good, the other all cheekbones and no conversation. Which is the whole restaurant in miniature — a good-looking, pared-down room and cooking that keeps promising a wow it doesn't quite deliver. You won't feel ripped off, and you won't feel spoiled. Every year or so somebody talks me into it, and I go, still wondering if it'll grow into itself.

Handsome room, in that bare-brick way that tells you the lighting cost more than the chairs. Deciding what to order was the hardest part of the meal, and not because everything tempted: the menu reads better than it eats, and nothing on it told me what the house believes in. What we chose was capable and forgotten by morning. Not a fleecing, not a treat. Once a year, out of curiosity, when somebody else books.
