Our take

Bread still warm when it reached the table, and that told me plenty before a single dish arrived. Franca is where I'd take my sister, which is not small praise: she cooked at our mother's elbow longer than I did and forgives nothing. The base is traditional, the ideas laid over it are the kitchen's own, and they earn their keep. Plates arrive right and go back empty; nobody is performing for anybody. Shut on Saturdays and Sundays, which says outright whose table this is: people working nearby who intend to return, week in, week out. My sister would nod at that too. Every couple of months I become one of them, and the next visit is half-planned before I've paid.

Order this: Whatever's chalked on the board today; that's where this kitchen thinks aloud.

Warm bread, properly rested, arrived exactly when we needed something to hold. That timing ran through the whole meal: courses spaced so each got its due, no lull, no pile-up. The room makes no promises, and the street outside makes fewer, yet the kitchen paces a meal like it has cooked for the same neighbours for years. Competence without noise, flavours calm, nothing staged. I call in four times a year, give or take, and the rhythm has never slipped.

That unassuming room on the Eixample grid looked exactly the same on my second visit, which reassured me. The plates had moved on: sharper flavours, better timing, a kitchen that had tightened its grip while nobody was looking. First time round I thought it pleasant; this time it had my full attention. Places that improve between visits, without announcing it, are the ones I keep going back to.
