Our take

Pale wood, vinegared rice on the air, a counter scrubbed the way my mother scrubbed hers: Jara makes its case before the first piece is set down. Omakase means handing over every decision, which does not come naturally to me, but these are careful hands and the produce deserves the trust. What I really want to talk about is the end of the night, when the folder lands. This format has taught Barcelona some silly prices; here I added the total up twice out of old habit and found nothing to quarrel with. Not cheap, mind. Fairly counted, which is a different thing. I stepped out into Sant Gervasi feeling looked after rather than fleeced, and that feeling is the verdict. They close Monday and Tuesday. Once a year, when I want the ceremony of the counter, I will be back on that stool.

Order this: No menu to wrestle; take the stool, say yes, and let the chef choose everything.

Her chopsticks went down mid-story, and she just pointed at the counter. Same, honestly. One piece from that dinner has lived rent-free in my head for weeks, and I've stopped trying to evict it. The counter sits way uptown in Sant Gervasi, the hands behind it are careful, and the pricing stays saner than the format usually allows. For me it's a special-occasion thing, spaced way out, and every visit makes the wait feel correct.

Booking secured, one decision remains, which is to say none at all: at an omakase counter you surrender the ordering, and Jara rewards the surrender. Careful hands, decent product, a meal assembled piece by piece in front of you. The format can turn precious in this city; this one stays the right side of sensible, the bill included. Once a year I keep the appointment, for the ritual as much as the fish, and leave content.
