We turned down dessert, which for me is close to a sin, and the room forgave us by making the last savoury course feel like a finale anyway. I had come up to Gràcia wary; a room this talked-about is usually coasting on its own noise. Instead the plates kept their promises one after another, generous in the old way, priced below what the cooking gives. The welcome deserves its own sentence: within minutes you are treated as somebody's returning cousin, and the whole table relaxes into the evening. Che meraviglia, honestly, to find popularity and quality holding hands. That closing mouthful, mopped up slowly while the room hummed around us, is the memory I carry home. Reserve days ahead, arrive hungry, stay late.

Two courses in and the service has slowed to a crawl, the room full past comfort, our wine resting somewhere out of reach. That's the flaw, and on a busy night in Gràcia you should expect it. What it doesn't sink is the cooking, which stays generous and exact even while the floor is drowning. Popularity has consequences; the plates, mercifully, aren't among them.
Rice for two was the plan until our neighbours' plates went past and changed my mind. Gràcia was out in force: couples celebrating, one long family table, hardly a phone raised anywhere. Places this loved usually make me wary, but the crowd here eats rather than performs. What arrived was real cooking, and generous with it. I'll be back within the season, and I don't say that lightly.
