Our take

Butter and onions, somewhere at the back: the smell reached our table before the bread did, and it set the tone for everything after. At the next table two regulars were debating, at length, whether the kitchen had changed its greengrocer, and people only argue about that in places where the food is worth arguing over. The plates are ample and carefully made, produce given room to speak, nothing chasing novelty and nothing cutting corners either. My reservation, if I am honest, is that the meal never once surprised me, and part of me missed that. Still, the welcome felt genuine rather than rehearsed, the prices behave themselves, and I left full and calm, already half-planning who to bring. An afternoon here each year, an old friend opposite, is enough.

Order this: A market main built on the day's produce, shared without hurry.

Somewhere between courses on my second visit, it struck me that the staff were not performing their warmth; they were simply glad we had returned, exactly as they had seemed the first time. That domestic ease is the real asset of the house. The cooking, both times, was pleasant without insisting on itself. Most visitors will never find the place, which may be its best protection. A yearly visit, on a dull afternoon, is quietly restorative.

Inside, the room is nearly domestic, and the staff seem genuinely glad you turned up rather than performing it. Step back out, though, and the Eixample hurries past without a glance, and I partly understand why. The welcome outruns the plates, which are pleasant and a touch cautious. On a grey afternoon it does a job. One visit a year will cover me.

That slow-cooked main arrived lukewarm at the centre, and once you notice, you keep noticing: a sauce split at the edge, seasoning that lands heavily on one plate and goes missing on the next. A shame, because the room has a domestic warmth you can't teach, and the staff seem genuinely pleased you came. Charm covers a multitude, but only for the odd visit; up close, the kitchen needs steadier hands than it currently has.
