Our take

I very nearly ordered the safe thing, the dish you choose when a Gòtic address has trained you to expect little. Then I noticed the regulars were eating something else entirely, and changed course, which turned out to be the lesson of the place. Deciding what to order here is worth doing slowly. The menu is a plain read, and the best of it is seasonal Catalan cooking with a steady hand behind it, textures looked after, no plate shouting for attention. In a quarter where most menus come laminated in six languages, a kitchen cooking for the people who actually live nearby deserves guarding. The value surprised me too, in the right direction. Once a year is my true rhythm, and every visit has ended the same way: glad the exception exists, and slightly reluctant to say where it is.

Order this: Ask which Catalan plate is in season that week and build lunch around it.

My confession is a small one: what I remember best was the plainest dish of the night, served just off the heat so the flavour had room to open, the texture left alone rather than worked to death. Someone in that kitchen tastes as they cook. In a corner of Ciutat Vella given over to laminated menus, this room looks after its own first. A yearly visit, and worth the wait between.

Honestly, good cooking in this part of town tends to get elbowed aside by menus printed in six languages, so finding this place felt like winning something. I came in soaked from one of those sideways October storms and got a dry seat by the wall, proper produce, regulars at their usual tables. The kitchen doesn't chase the passing trade and doesn't need to. A yearly visit is enough for me, but I'm glad it's there, holding its corner.
