'Same as always, and whatever he's proud of today,' said the man at the next table, closing his menu unopened, and I resolved on the spot to copy him. Wise man. Taverna undersells this Esquerra de l'Eixample kitchen: the market gets taken seriously, the seasoning carries conviction, doneness lands where it should, and invention stays on a leash held by the ingredient itself. Because the menu follows the stalls, no two visits repeat, and for anyone who comes often that is most of the charm. Sundays it goes dark, as does the market that feeds it. Monthly is the right rhythm, pilgrimage the wrong word; bring appetite and leave the concept-chasing to others.

The panel — every critic who went
Unanimous — all agreeGone eleven when we finally surrendered the table, and the last glass was to blame. Wine gets real thought here without any fuss being made about it: correct stems, sensible serving temperatures, bottles that suit whatever the kitchen is doing that week. Few rooms at this price look after the meeting of plate and pour so well. For somewhere calling itself a taverna, the cellar keeps surprising me, and I keep letting it.
Tavernas ought to be loud, and this one obliges: a full-throated neighbourhood din of glasses and argument, nothing reverent about it. The racket rather flatters the food, because underneath it the kitchen is far more ambitious than the name lets on. Seasonal produce treated with intent, technique applied without display, creativity tied to the ingredient rather than the concept. This is a table for regular use rather than pilgrimage, and better for it; I plan to use it accordingly.
You hear the pans before you see the room, a proper working clatter, and it settles me the way the market does at eight in the morning. The first sip of the house white told me the rest: somebody here buys with care and cooks to the season, not to the sign outside. Taverna is a humble name for cooking this sure of itself. I go back whenever the produce turns, and it has not once let me down.
