Forget dinner, or at least postpone it. Lunch is when Mont Bar makes its strongest case: daylight in the room, an unforced pace, plates given time to be read instead of rushed. My blunt view is that this kitchen cooks at a level its easy manner undersells. The creative side stays anchored in the Mediterranean, temperatures are watched closely, and the real signature is knowing when to stop, dishes that end one element short of where fashion would push them. Dinner is very good too, only busier, and the ease that sets the room apart thins as the evening fills. Come at midday and order from the à la carte; the kitchen does the rest. Mine is a table for every season of the year, booked for one o'clock without exception.
Order this: Off the à la carte, whatever the kitchen is composing that day.

Heat pressing down on the Esquerra that evening, the sort that argues against dinner altogether; the room's ease won the argument. The meal finished on its strongest note, a closing bite so composed the table went quiet over it, the mark of a kitchen that edits itself. Creative cooking here stays tethered to the Mediterranean, sauces brought down slowly, nothing forced for effect. Less ceremony than the reputation suggests, happily. I have pencilled in the next visit already; there will be several more this year.
Nearly ordered the fish, then let the house steer me elsewhere, and the first ten minutes put any doubts away: greeted at the door, seated without theatre, bread and a small taste on the table while we chose. The cooking is creative but stands on Mediterranean ground, and the plates know when to stop. Less formal than the ambition might suggest, and better for it. A place to return to often, and I intend to.
Crackle first, then give: half these plates run on texture contrast, the sort of detail that tells you a kitchen is wide awake. This is where I'd bring my pickiest friend, the one who side-eyes anything labeled creative, because the Mediterranean backbone keeps every idea tethered to actual eating. Serious cooking without the stiffness, and servers who seem genuinely glad you showed. She'd surrender by course two. Round two is already a given.
