Our take

Outside, the Esquerra de l'Eixample keeps up its mid-morning hum, delivery vans and neighbours with shopping trolleys, and Nectari sits in the middle of it without raising its voice. What struck me this visit was the wine: a short list, sensibly priced, and a waiter who asked what we were eating before recommending anything. The glass came at the right temperature, poured without ceremony, topped up before we noticed it was low. That care carries into the kitchen. The cooking is Mediterranean at heart, the creative touches belonging rather than stuck on, the flavours clean and the cooking points where they should be. No fireworks, and none needed; the pleasure is in the balance, kept steady the way a good household keeps its accounts. It stays a neighbourhood table despite the ambition, the harder trick by far. Next time I'll let that waiter choose the bottle; he earned it.

Order this: Trust the waiter's pairing and order a Mediterranean main; the balance shows best there.

I almost went for the simplest dish on the card, then let the waiter's raised eyebrow steer me toward the creative end instead (good call). The cooking here is polished without holding you at arm's length, Mediterranean at heart, and the bill lands softly for this level of care. No fireworks; the pleasure sits in balance, and in knowing the next visit will taste just as good.

One grumble, small but real: the water took its time arriving on a sticky June evening, when the Eixample holds its heat like a grudge. Everything after came at exactly the right temperature, including the welcome. Nectari cooks graceful Mediterranean food that never keeps you at arm's length, the creative touches earned rather than bolted on, the flavours clean, the restraint fitting its size. No fireworks; that is rather the point. The balance is the pleasure, and it draws me back through the seasons.
