Our take

The first plate came out cool, and on a sweltering Gràcia afternoon that felt like intelligence rather than accident: a kitchen watching the weather and cooking to it. The rest of the meal carried the same sense of proportion. Modern ideas kept on a leash, the basics doing the talking, nothing over-thought or under-seasoned, nothing auditioning for a photograph. The room is personal and unfancy, which fits food this grounded. What impressed me most was the arithmetic: you leave having eaten seriously and paid like a resident, a combination this city manages less often than it thinks. I went in high summer; I'll return when the weather turns, on the suspicion the kitchen will have turned with it.

Order this: The set contemporary menu; the kitchen's intent and its value meet there.

Gràcia has a way of folding good kitchens into snug rooms, and this one fits: personal, unfussy, close enough that you hear the pans. The noise stays friendly, never bruising. On the plate there is proportion, modern cooking that stops just where it should, salt and heat well judged, ambition sized to the format. Prices stay decent too, with no corner visibly cut. A local I'd be glad to have on my own street.

Outside, Gràcia carries on: narrow pavements, someone's dinner drifting from a window, a square two corners away. Oníric belongs to that scale. A personal, contemporary kitchen with solid technique underneath and no interest in posing, priced so the neighbourhood can actually use it. Proportion is the word I keep reaching for, ambition matched to format. Every few months I climb the hill with pleasure.

Our waiter had to lean right in to hear us, which points to the one thing worth knowing about the room: hard surfaces, close tables, and a proper din once Gràcia comes out to eat. Worth enduring. The cooking is contemporary without straining for effect, portions and prices in sensible proportion, ambition scaled to the format. I go back every few months and mind the noise a little less each time.
