Our take
Somewhere around 9:40 on a packed Friday, our waitress clocked that we'd arrived with no plan, talked us out of over-ordering, and had plates moving before we'd finished deciding. That's the whole appeal of this Gràcia standby: you show up with zero strategy and get looked after anyway. The cooking aims for pleasant and hits it, easy plates at fair prices, and for a casual dinner that's the entire job description. Will any single dish haunt me? No. But the room is relaxed in a way you can't fake, the kind of spot that absorbs a Friday crowd without losing its temper. I've stopped in a few times this spring already, mostly because it makes no demands. Every couple of months, whenever Gràcia and hunger line up, it's an easy yes.
Order this: Something tomato-forward plus one simple plate to share; that combo is the move here.

The panel — every critic who went
Unanimous — all agreeMy sole complaint is indecision: the carte is amiable from end to end, so nothing demands to be chosen first (I asked; the advice was sound). What followed was competent cooking at a modest price in a relaxed Gràcia room. Ambition is not the project; ease is, and it succeeds. Every few months I arrive without a plan and leave without a grievance, which is precisely the job such a place should do.
Not every table has to change your life. At Pepa Tomate we arrived unannounced on a busy Gràcia evening, and the waiter had us seated, watered and holding menus before we'd finished apologising for not booking. That small competence set the tone. The food is friendly rather than fearless, fairly priced, gone from memory by morning. I'll take that gladly a few evenings a year.
Warm bread, a cold beer, and no decision that matters much: Gràcia in its most easy-going register. Then one plate genuinely surprised me, a simple thing made with real care, better than the room's relaxed manner had promised. The rest is friendly cooking at friendly prices, nothing you will dream about, nothing that lets you down either. A few times a year that is the whole brief, and Pepa Tomate fills it.
