Our take

Two tables over, a grandmother was explaining a stew to her grandson with the seriousness other cities save for football, and half the dining room was quietly listening in. This is the crowd at Petit Comitè: people who grew up on this cooking and have come to make sure nobody has ruined it. Nobody has. Carles Gaig's name carries a whole lineage of Catalan kitchens, and this Eixample room honours the stews and market plates the tradition is built on, polished without being embalmed. It is comfortable, a little grand around the edges, yet what arrives stays closer to a family Sunday than the linen suggests. Everyone shares, everyone argues, everyone compares the dish to somebody's mother's version, and the kitchen survives the comparison. A few visits a year feels right to me, ideally with people who will fight over the last spoonful.

Order this: The Catalan stew of the day, done the old way, with spoons for the table.

A starched napkin was across my lap before I had finished sitting down, and the meal kept that early rhythm to the end: stews and market plates landing at intervals a metronome would respect, no dead air, no pile-up of courses. This is cooking from the Gaig line, so the bar sits high, and the execution clears it without strain. Texture and temperature both minded. I book a table each season, and it resets my bearings.

I had all but ordered the market plate before the table beside me received its stew, and my resolve dissolved on sight. Look around the room: Barcelona families of a certain vintage, quietly celebrating, people raised on this cooking who would notice any shortcut. None came. The old Catalan repertoire is honoured without being embalmed, a rarer feat than it sounds, and I leave already planning the next visit.
