Our take

There's nothing wrong with this room, which is roughly the nicest and the meanest thing I can say about it. It's comfortable and lightly worn, the kind of space you settle into without thinking; the market-driven format asks little of you and hands back about the same. So let's talk about the bill, because that's where Público makes its case. Nothing on it stung. Nothing on it thrilled me — the math shakes out to an even trade, dinner for money, no funny business in either direction. I kept waiting for one plate to make an argument for a second visit, and it never quite arrived, but I also cleaned every plate, which counts for something. This is a once-a-year place for me: reliable, unremarkable, and priced accordingly. On the right low-key evening, that's plenty.

Order this: One straightforward main and a modest glass; nothing fancier needed.

My companion, harder to please than I am, took the bar seat and declared it the best spot going, and he was right: from there the modest operation makes sense, the pace easy, nobody performing. The cooking is fine, no more and no less, and the value reasonable without being memorable. Some evenings that is all anyone needs. It fed us well, we paid without wincing, and I doubt I shall think of it again until next summer.

Fine cooking is a cold word, and it is the right one here. Our waiter was pleasant, brought the plates in good order, took them away again, and at no point did anyone at the table lean in. Everything worked; nothing invited. I like a room that wants me back, and this one seems content simply to feed me. For me it is a table for the odd undemanding evening, and no more often than that.
