My second dinner at PUR ended exactly as the first had, with me scraping at a dessert I had sworn only to taste. That last spoonful is the place in miniature: nothing showy, everything finished properly, pleasure that creeps up on you instead of announcing itself. Nandu Jubany cooks Mediterranean food built on the morning's shopping, fish shown respect, vegetables allowed their own voice, the technique working where you cannot see it. In these smart blocks of the Eixample you often pay for the letterhead rather than the dinner; here the bill answers to what is on the plate, and it comes out fair. Discipline keeps it so. PUR has become one of the few polished rooms I return to out of habit, and the habit shows no sign of breaking.
Order this: Come at midday; the set lunch is where this kitchen's generosity shows.

Most of the Dreta de l'Eixample is better at addresses than at dinner: grand doorways, serious rents, kitchens coasting on postcode. Then you reach PUR, which cooks as though the neighbourhood were watching and might revoke its lease. The Mediterranean plates are disciplined and confident without a gram of preening, and when you step back out among the smug façades you feel the difference at once. I would fold it into an ordinary week without a second thought.
Polished rooms in the Dreta de l'Eixample tend to promise more than they serve, long on address and short on follow-through. PUR reverses the ratio. I went on a sweltering July evening when nobody sane is hungry, and the Mediterranean cooking read the heat better than I had: bright and light-footed, disciplined underneath. That discipline never stiffens into fuss, which is the rarer trick. Every few months, whatever the thermometer says.
Rather good, isn't it, my husband offered around the second course; he is not a man given to volunteering opinions. By then the room had thinned to a low, contented murmur, the sound of a place at close that nobody is in a hurry to leave. The Mediterranean cooking is disciplined without being dull, the bill honest for the postcode, and on a block of the Eixample better at addresses than dinners, that amounts to a small miracle. We booked again on the way out.
