Our take

It was a grey, blustery evening in Poble Sec, the sort that calls for stew, and I had booked a table for raw fish. Rarely has a plan looked so wrong and ended so well. The house style marries Galician product to a Japanese blade: buy superbly, cut precisely, then have the confidence to stop. There is nowhere to hide in cooking like this, and nothing here needs to. The pedigree is the Iglesias family, whose earlier rooms were Espai Kru and, before that, Rías de Galicia; that buying power is visible on every plate. Better still, the room refuses solemnity; you are expected to have a good time, not take notes. It sits at the dear end of casual, yet the gap between the bill and the pleasure runs, for once, in the diner's favour. Four or five dinners a year, and I resent none of them.

Order this: Whatever the raw side lists as today's catch; the kitchen's judgement beats yours.

On the street outside, Poble Sec was doing its usual evening churn, and nothing warned me how well fed I would leave. Galician seafood run through Japanese raw technique, the product barely touched because it needs no help, handled with equal parts respect and swagger. Then the bill, which lands lighter than cooking of this order usually allows. I walked out recalculating, happily, and I'll be back before the season turns.

Loud tables, happy people, zero stiffness: the room in Poble Sec feels like a party that happens to serve pristine seafood. It's a mixed crowd, neighborhood regulars elbow to elbow with people who clearly crossed town for the raw fish. Galician product, Japanese knife work, barely anything done to either, and everyone's grinning. I'm obsessed with the combination, and every couple of months it pulls me back.
