Our take

Frankly, half of Barcelona could learn from a kitchen this unbothered by trend. Ribera Manero sits on the seam of Les Corts and the Eixample, half restaurant, half fishmonger, and the point of it is good Spanish product left largely alone. The flaw, such as it is: nothing here will startle you. The cooking is deliberately plain, and anyone arriving in want of fireworks will leave underfed on drama. I've concluded that doesn't sink it. Restraint is the whole offer, and the kitchen runs straight through from mid-morning to eleven at night, which makes this one of the few serious lunches to be had at five o'clock. Three or four visits a year, the cured things to start, something from the counter to follow, and not much grumbling when the bill arrives.

Order this: Cured Iberian things first, then whatever the fish counter looked proudest of that morning.

Small grievance first: lunch dawdled, and I had somewhere to be. That settled, the argument here is the product. Fine Spanish raw material, handled with a restraint that borders on reverence, nothing tortured into a concept. Grown-up cooking that trusts its larder completely. I would not cross town for it weekly, but three or four times a year, wanting certainty rather than novelty, it earns the table.

Our waiter settled the what-to-order debate with a small nod towards what was best that day, and he was right to. Ribera Manero buys well and cooks plainly, the sort of address locals mention rather than photograph. No fireworks. But a grown-up lunch with no surprises is worth more than it sounds, and I keep coming back for precisely that.
