Our take
Two months separated my first visit from my second, and the second was better, which is the direction you want. First time round I had trudged up to Vallcarca half expecting to regret the walk; instead I found bright, modern Mediterranean cooking at prices that made me look at the bill twice (in the good way). The return settled it: same seasonal plates handled with confidence, same sense of a place run by people who genuinely care. It is the sort of local you rather wish were yours, and this stretch of Gràcia is lucky to have it. Not one for the box-tickers, thankfully. I have made a habit of it now, one visit a season or so, and each feels less like an outing and more like coming back.
Order this: Whatever seasonal plate the kitchen sounds proudest of that week; ask, and they will tell you.

The panel — every critic who went
Divisive — the panel splitsSteam still coming off the bread, and a comparable warmth later in the figure at the bottom of the bill: paying here improves the memory of the meal, which is rarer than it should be. The modern Mediterranean cooking up in Vallcarca is vivid if not yet flawless, the odd sauce pushed a shade too far, yet the people plainly care. I repeat the walk every three months or so, and no longer grumble about the hill.
Walk uphill past where Gràcia stops being postcard and starts being neighbourhood, and Vallcarca opens out, unpolished and better for it. Saó belongs to that street rather than the prettier one below. The measured position, I gather, is polite approval; mine has drifted warmer with each visit. Bright Mediterranean plates, balance held, fair prices, a team paying attention. The climb has become a monthly habit, almost without my noticing.
First, the grumble: getting up to Vallcarca asks for commitment, and after dinner the trek home can flatten a good evening. Go at lunch instead. Daylight flatters the bright Mediterranean cooking, the pace is easier, and the bill feels even fairer at midday. The people running it obviously care, with none of the strutting you half expect from somewhere this talked about. I make the walk several times a year, always before dark.
