Our take

Refusing the carte was my first sound decision of the evening; the full tasting is the right call here, and the kitchen has earned the trust it asks for. I had crossed half the Esquerra expecting the woolly fusion Barcelona turns out by the dozen, and braced myself accordingly. Wrong. The Mediterranean larder submits to Japanese technique with real discipline: cuts made cleanly, fire applied briefly and with purpose, seasoning that understands where the line lies. Nothing stiffens, nothing postures. Take the counter if offered; the brigade works with a calm that is itself worth watching. Judge the plates rather than the chatter surrounding the address, and the plates win. Most months find me back there, an allegiance I grant almost nowhere, and repetition has only sharpened my esteem.

Order this: Book the counter and take the tasting entire, no amendments.

The bill I checked twice, not because it stung but because it seemed light for what had just happened. I'd sat close enough to see the kitchen splice Mediterranean produce with Japanese method, and the control borders on thrilling: fish cut with intent, heat applied by the second. The Esquerra de l'Eixample has a new fixture in my diary. Monthly sounds about right, and I don't say that often.

I nearly played it safe and pointed at the most Mediterranean-looking corner of the menu, before my companion steered me toward the Japanese side. Grazie to her. Watched from close range, this Esquerra de l'Eixample kitchen is a joy: cuts made cleanly, heat handled with nerve, two traditions folded together by hands that clearly practise. New this year and already sure of itself. I will be back within the month, and often after that.

Ten minutes in and we had already been fed twice, a snack with the aperitif and another with the first pour, both gone before the menus were open. That is how Taberna Kamikaze receives you, and it sets the tone. Mediterranean market, Japanese manners, and none of the stiffness that pairing can bring. The room moves fast without rushing anyone. I keep inventing excuses to be in the Esquerra at lunchtime.
