Our take

I almost ordered the burger, truthfully, homesickness was right there on the QR menu and it nearly won. Then the fryer hissed and I remembered why I came. This place does the British seaside thing with more polish than the name suggests, and the room has a happy, clattery noise to it: families, expats mid-argument about vinegar, oil crackling somewhere behind the counter. It's loud in the good way, the way that means nobody is performing. The batter shatters like it should, the chips are thick-cut and salted right, and nothing on the plate is trying to impress anyone. Transcendent? No. It's a craving with a dining room. There are a few of these around town now, and they run tidily. Once a year, when the gray weather hits and I need salt and vinegar and noise, this is where I end up.

Order this: Cod and chips done the traditional way, extra lemon, don't overthink it.

My daughter chose it, on one of those grey February days when Barcelona forgets itself and the damp gets into your bones. Fried fish suits such weather, I'll grant her that. The batter was crisp, the fish decent, the chips better than they needed to be. More care here than the name lets on, though a yearly visit is plenty for me. Good frying, foreign comfort.

From the street it reads as a postcard joke; at the range it is nothing of the sort. Watch closely: oil held at a steady temperature, batter thin and blistered, the cuisson of the fish judged to the minute. Proper technique, applied without vanity. What it lacks is any reason to hurry back. An annual craving, tidily met, and that is no small thing.
