Our take

My one gripe: getting a table took me three tries, and I'm blaming the neighborhood (word is clearly out). Look around the room on any given night and you'll see the Eixample in miniature — office friends deep into a second bottle, a couple celebrating something small, one solo diner working the menu with real intent. Nobody's performing for an audience. That crowd tells you what the kitchen already knows: this is modern cooking with actual confidence, familiar ideas nudged somewhere more interesting without ever losing the plot. Prices land right where ambition and value meet, which almost never happens anywhere. The welcome is warm, the room handsome without being precious. Of everything I've eaten in this stretch of the city lately, this is the one I keep pressing on friends. Go before the next wave of people like me makes it worse.

Order this: A spread of the small plates to share, plus real attention to the wine list.

Modern cooking this assured, at this price, is rarer in the Eixample than it ought to be. My only struggle at Topik was the ordering: half the menu takes a familiar idea and nudges it somewhere cleverer, and nothing reads like a trap. We solved it by sharing widely and regretted none of it. I'll be back before the menu turns over.

Halfway through a plate that took a familiar idea somewhere I didn't expect, I stopped worrying about what the evening would cost. The cooking is modern and quietly sure of itself, and the bill reads like a misprint in your favour. I know cooler heads shrug at it; I don't. For this money, in this part of the Eixample, I'd come back every few weeks and call it seny.

Second time round, I ordered the dish I'd wondered about since the first: a crisp shell giving way to something soft and properly hot inside, the sort of contrast only a kitchen plating at speed can manage. Topik cooks modern food with its head screwed on. My grumble stands, the portions could be more generous for hungry people. Still, it stays on my list, and the list is short.
