Our take

Let me start small: my glass stood empty for longer than the half-full room excused. Torpedo is a natural wine bar in the Esquerra de l'Eixample with an idea and a certain energy, and the crowd is the most polished thing in it: young, good-looking, photographing the bocadillos before eating them. I understand the appeal. The trouble is that the plates look better than they follow through, and the gap between the two is the whole distance between good and photogenic. On a forgiving night, with the right company, you would leave content enough. But this stretch of the Eixample is not short of places to drink well and eat better, and I struggle to argue for the detour. Once a year, perhaps, to see whether the kitchen has caught up with its audience.

Order this: A bocadillo, one glass of something natural, and expectations kept on a short lead.

"Is this meant to be cold?" I asked, pointing at a plate that looked stunning and had clearly been waiting somewhere for its close-up. Credit where due: no argument, no eye-roll, it vanished and returned properly hot within minutes. That save was the best cooking of the night. Everything photographs beautifully here and eats like a rough draft, big concept, thin follow-through. There's a real spark in the idea, though. Check back with me next year.

Two glasses in and the list was still the best thing on the table. Torpedo pours with more conviction than it cooks: the wine side has energy and a point of view, while the plates look terrific and stop there, prettiness without follow-through. I'll pass by again next year for the drinking, and keep hoping the kitchen catches up with the bar.
