Our take

We almost asked for half the menu out of sheer good cheer, then reined ourselves in and took the seats with a view of the kitchen. Up close you learn the truth of a place. Here the truth is decent: proper Iberian product handled with respect, the slicer and the grill doing most of the talking, no cleverness getting in the way. It is not precision cooking and does not pretend to be; a plate here leans on its raw material rather than its technique, and the material can carry the weight. The room fills with people out for a good time, and the noise is the friendly sort. Once a year suits me, when I want jolly rather than remarkable, and the bill will not sour the mood on the way out. Sundays they rest, as a kitchen should.

Order this: A board of cured meats and cheese, shared while the wine goes round.

Slices of ibérico, eaten at the bar with an elbow among strangers, is how this place makes its case. Take the counter seat for the noise and the cheer, which is half the point: a room full of people after a good time rather than a revelation. The produce carries it, the cooking wisely stays out of the way, the welcome is genuine. It won't redraw your map of the city, and once in a while that is exactly enough.

Like ducking into a friend's kitchen when the sky opens: that is Tres Porquets on a wet night in Sant Martí. Honest Iberian produce, no ambition beyond feeding you properly, a room humming with people celebrating nothing in particular. I drank a pleasant glass of white and watched the tables enjoy themselves. It will not alter how you think about eating in this city, but on the right soaked evening it is exactly enough. Once the rains come back, so will I.

Translucent slices of ham, cut so fine the plate ghosted through them, arriving cool and turning silky the moment they warmed on the tongue. Around us, the true verdict: tables of regulars the waiters call by name, a family holding what was plainly their usual corner. Nobody here expects revelation, and some rate the place merely pleasant for exactly that reason. Va bene. Pleasant, carried off with this much heart out in Sant Martí, gets me back every few months without fail.
