Our take

Let me own up to something: I chose the plainest-sounding dish on the menu almost out of spite. Two had stopped me, one all flourish, one rooted in that day's market, and I went with the market on principle, then spent the evening wondering whether the flourish might have won me over. I doubt it. Artur Martínez runs this snug Eixample taverna, dinners only, with obvious technical gifts, and when a plate connects you see just what he could do. Too often, though, the cleverness fed my eyes and left the rest of me politely hungry. Trust the produce, I kept thinking; it has carried Catalan cooking a long way. The talent is not in doubt, and kitchens this young rarely stand still. A year from now I will try again, hopeful, still unconvinced.

Order this: Choose the humblest thing listed; that is where his cooking speaks plainest.

The room is calmer than the cooking, which tells you something. There's genuine ambition at work, a modern Catalan line drawn by a technically able hand, and when a plate lands it shows real craft. The flaw is that not every plate lands; the evening swings between conviction and hesitation. For me that unevenness matters — I'd rather be moved less often and trusted more. Worth a look on an adventurous evening even so.

Booking was easy, almost suspiciously easy for cooking this ambitious. Choosing dinner was the harder part: the modern Catalan menu reads like a manifesto, and I dithered longer than I'd admit before letting the kitchen steer. Some plates carried real craft, considered down to the last texture; others felt like ideas still in rehearsal. Able hands, unfinished argument. Give it a year; I want to know which side wins.

Halfway through, our waiter reset the table for a course that arrived well behind its cue, and the pause told the story: a kitchen that can evidently cook, and a dining room not yet moving at its speed. When a plate is right, the craft is unmistakable. Too much of the evening resembled a rehearsal. I'll look in again in a year, hoping the timing has caught up with the talent.
