Our take

Nobody should book Viblioteca expecting dinner in any grand sense, and once you accept that, the place becomes surprisingly likeable. It is a small Gràcia room built for grazing: wine chosen with intent, cheese treated as the main event, plates there to support the drinking rather than the reverse. The service moment that won me over came mid-evening, when I dithered over the list and the person pouring asked what cheese I had picked, then worked backwards from there. That is the correct order of operations in a room like this, and it happened without a flicker of ceremony. The ambitions are deliberately narrow and the execution sits inside them without strain. Do not plan an evening around it. Do drop in once in a while, when the mood calls for a glass of something curious and a wedge of something ripe.

Order this: A cheese board first, then let whoever is pouring choose the glass to match.

We left before nine, and that is the whole diagnosis: a prelude, not an evening. Viblioteca suits one particular guest, the friend who prefers cheese to dessert and conversation to ceremony, and it is precisely that friend I bring, more or less annually. Wine crowds the shelves, the ambitions stay deliberately small, and dinner in any real sense is not the proposition. Accept those terms and the hour passes agreeably; demand more and you will go home twice disappointed.

Be honest about what you're signing up for: a place to drink wine and eat cheese, not somewhere to dine, and the room announces it at volume. Hard surfaces, close-set tables, conversation ricocheting off the walls once the room fills. As a pleasant hour it works; as a full evening it wears thin, the din hurrying you along whether or not you meant to leave. An annual visit, early doors, a glass and a wedge, and out before the noise wins.

A cork stood upright on our table, left from the last sitting, and it told me the house's priorities before any menu could. Wine first, cheese close behind, cooking a distant third. I dithered between the only two plates of any substance, and neither would have fed my father after a morning's work. As a glass, a wedge and an unhurried hour, it serves well enough. Expect supper and you will walk home hungry. A yearly visit, on those terms, is plenty.
