Our take

My companion, who claims to know nothing about wine, spotted it first: we would be drinking among the shelves, bottles rising on every side like a library you're allowed to touch. Within ten minutes one of the staff had asked three good questions and come back with a Catalan grower neither of us had met. That is the house manner. It has been a shop first since 1932, the food and cheese side next door on Agullers, and the bar grew out of the cellar rather than the other way round; you can taste the difference. The naturals get their due, but the range stretches far beyond them. I come back a few times a year and leave a little wiser each time. No airs, just depth.

Order this: A Catalan grower you've never met, with cheese from next door on Agullers.

Evening had settled over the old city by the time I stepped out, hours past the single quick glass I had planned. Such is the peril of drinking inside a working cellar. I had wandered the Ciutat Vella lanes expecting a shop with stools; what I found was range of real seriousness, the naturals present but never the whole story, every shelf within reach of the table. Food turns up mainly to pace the drinking. Bring patience, and no plans for afterwards.

Let me be straight: drinking inside a working cellar, surrounded by the actual bottles, is how a wine bar should feel. The flaw, though — on a busy afternoon it tips more shop than bar, and you're sipping in the middle of commerce. It doesn't sink the experience: the range runs wider and deeper than almost anywhere nearby, and the naturals get their due without crowding out the rest. I keep a quarterly date with it.
