Our take

Poble Sec was winding down as I walked up, shutters half-closed, and then one doorway spilling noise and light like a family argument you would happily join. Deciding what to eat at Xemei is the happiest kind of impossible. The menu speaks Venetian: cicchetti to pick at with your fingers, oily fish brightened with vinegar and onion, pasta that tastes of somebody's zio at the stove. My method is surrender. Start with the little bites, take one pasta, then let the brothers pour whatever they think you deserve. You may wait, you may squeeze in, and nobody looks at a watch. Che meraviglia, and I say that perhaps once a season. A monthly table if my diary allowed; every few months in truth, each one anticipated.

Order this: Cicchetti to open, a Venetian pasta after, and the brothers' choice in your glass.

Watched the next table wave away the menu before it touched the cloth, and copied them at once. That is the local intelligence: let the Venetian brothers decide, and the meal arranges itself, small salty things first, then a pasta with the assurance of a family recipe. Nothing strains for effect, which is exactly why it lands. The welcome is sincere, the pricing old-fashioned in its decency. Poble Sec is fortunate, and I intend to keep exploiting that, every season or so.

Halfway through the meal, one of the Venetian brothers stopped at our table, topped up the wine unasked and stayed a moment to talk, as if we were family arriving late. That warmth is real, and it is what people fall for here. Truth be told, the vinegar-and-oily-fish register charms me without conquering me; my heart stays with our own coast — and yet I understand the devotion. One visit a year says it right, for me.
